William Jennings Bryan Typed Manuscript with Handwritten Notes - Amazing Content

American politician (1860–1925), three-time presidential candidate, Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson, and one of the attorneys in the 1925 Scopes Trial.  Typed manuscript AS SECRETARY OF STATE, unsigned but with approximately 30 words in Bryan's handwriting, May 11, 1914, 8.25x11, decorative The Raleigh letterhead, Washington D.C., in full:
Secretary Bryan's attention having been called to certain rumors afloat in Iowa, gave out the following statement:
'I am sure Mr. Connolly has not declared that President Wilson and I are behind his candidacy.
'The President does not take part in contests between Democrats who are candidates for nomination and I rarely do.  In the case of Mr. Connolly I count him among my personal friends and I have a high opinion of his ability and Democracy.  If he is nominated it will give me pleasure to do what I can to aid in his election, but I do not undertake  to decide as to his relative availability as compared with others who may be candidates.  It is a question which the Democracy of Iowa must settle and with the settlement of which I would not undertake to interfere.
'I do not know Mr. Meredith
so well
, but I
understand
that he is a progressive democrat and in accord with the administration.  I
shall
be pleased to aid in
his
election
if he is nominated
Bryan then adds, in is own hand:
And what I say of Mr. Connolly & Mr. Meredith I say of any other good Democrat where [?] the Dmeocrats may succeed.
