    Description

Revised 27 August. Just noticed the wrong "Buy it Now" price has been used on this item. Apologies.
Stunning hallmarked (1902-3) Sterling silver Scottish basket hilted broadsword display letter opener by Mackay & Chisolm of Edinburgh, complete with the original felt basket liner. These usually deteriorate over time and are seldom seen now.
Mackay & Chisolm were renowned Silversmiths, Jewelers and medal makers, based in Princes Street, Edinburgh. They also specialized in desk items and Sgian Dubhs.
Overall length is approximately 9 ¼ inches from blade tip to hilt end. Rounded blade tip. Hallmarked with Scottish thistle, Edinburgh castle mark; stylized letter “b” for 1902-1903 production year; and “Mackay & Chisolm” within a rectangle. Three fullers at the hilt end of the blade on the obverse (through the hallmarks) and reverse. Ornately decorated basket hilt, finely engraved. Wire bound leather handle. Original red felt basket liner. Fullered pommel. Weight is 67 grams (2 /38 ounces).
Condition is excellent - and please note that we have NOT polished the item for the photographs. Please see the photos which form part of the description.
This is a very desirable example of Mackay & Chisolm’s work and seldom seen for sale – having the original red felt basket hilt liner is uncommon.
Priced to sell. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We are NOT dealers - disposing of a collection of items.
