Description

Presented is a superb Irish sterling silver large ladle. This piece dates to around the 1760s and was made by David Peter. The ladle is done in a traditional Irish form, with a round bowl and a long, elegantly arched handle. The end of the handle is sharply hooked downwards, so the ladle can be hung on something. The ladle is well made from thick, heavy gauge silver, with a nice feeling of weight in the hand. The end of the handle has a finely engraved crest of what looks like a bishop's miter or other clerical headwear. There is also a monogram of T to the back of the drop of the bowl.
The ladle is in great condition. There are no splits, no dents, no monogram removals, no breaks, and no repairs. The hook bend at the end of the handle is original.
This piece is hallmarked on the stem with the Hibernia mark for sterling silver, the harp crowned for the city of Dublin, and the maker's mark for David Peter, stamped twice.
The ladle is about 14 inches long.
This piece weighs 237 grams or 8.4 regular ounces.
