Presented is a fantastic English first standard silver inkwell and sander desk set. This set dates to 1705, and was made by Louis Cuny. This set is made from Britannia standard silver, which is 958 purity. It's worth noting that this is a higher purity than sterling, which is 925. The inkwell and sander are a good large size, with an attractive gadrooned rim to the lid which matches the rim around the tray. The inkwell does not currently have a glass liner, and we don't know if it ever did, however it would very easy to find a good fitting liner or have one cut down. The tray has three round spaces, to hold the sander, inkwell and bell, and a high sided trough for holding pens. The tray sits on four bun form feet. There is an inscription around the middle space of the tray, which reads: Feb 1777 The gift of the Right Honorable Lady Charlotte Edwin, to John Franklen Esq.
The tray, the sander, the inkwell, and the interior rim of the lid to both the sander and the inkwell are all hallmarked with the maker's mark of 'CV' for Louis Cuny. The tray itself is also hallmarked with the Britannia mark for 958 purity silver, the lion's head erased for the city of London, and the date letter for 1705.
This set is in fabulous overall condition. The inkwell has a vertical rectangular patch, which is very hard to notice from the outside. The pen tray has a very minor split in the back lefthand corner. The bell is not original to the set, but it fits perfectly and matches the set visually exceptionally well. The sander and inkwell sit in their spots very securely and the lids fit tightly. There are no other splits, no breaks, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The tray has approximate dimensions of 10 3/4 x 6 1/2 x 1 inches. The inkwell and the sander are approximately 2 1/2 inches tall. The bell is approximately 4 3/4 inches tall.
The weight for the entire set is 1260 grams or 44.1 regular ounces.
