Offered today is the autograph of James Murray Mason (1798 -1871), a politician who represented Virginia in both the House ands Senate before the Civil War. During the war he was the Confederacy's leading diplomat and sailed to Europe to secure Europe's purchasing Confederate cotton. While enroute, he was captured by the Union Navy and held for five months in what became known as the Trent Affair. Later, he was released to continue his mission.
