Description
Considered to be one of the most famous newspaper headlines in U.S journalism, ''Dewey Defeats Truman'' was the incorrect banner headline on the front page of the Chicago Daily Tribune on November 3, 1948. Many of America's newspapers had predicated an easy Dewey victory with most polls in agreement. In July of 1948 President Harry S. Truman [1884 1972] considered the ''underdog'' embarked on an ambitious 22,000 mile ''whistle stop'' railroad and automobile campaign tour across America. At every stop President Truman asked the crowds to help him to keep his job which eventually lead to his re-election. The now famous photograph was snapped in the early morning hours two days after the election showing a beaming President Truman holding aloft a copy of the Chicago Tribune with the famous headline ''Dewey Defeats Truman''. President Harry S. Truman was the 33rd President of the United States who served from 1945 to 1952. Harry S. Truman succeeded to the presidency on April 12,1945, upon the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and was elected to a second term in 1948. Governor Thomas E. Dewey [1902 1971] was a lawyer, politician and prosecutor who served as the 47th Governor of New York from 1943 to 1954. Listed for auction is a unique framed display which contains the autographs of President Harry S. Truman and Governor Thomas E. Dewey. The display is centered around the iconic image of President Truman holding a copy of the Chicago Daily Tribune. The image is a quality b/w photograph which measures 15.00 x 10.00 inches. Mounted below are the autographs of President Harry Truman and Governor Thomas E. Dewey signed as follows. The President Harry S. Truman autograph is signed ''Harry S. Truman'' in black fountain pen. The autograph of Governor Thomas E. Dewey is signed on a [TLS] typed letter signed on the State of New York, Governor letterhead, dated March 30, 1949. The autograph is signed ''Thomas E. Dewey'' in blue fountain pen above his title as Governor. Both autographs are in fine condition and are bold and display perfectly. Mounted below the autographs is a professionally engraved plaque which reads as follows, ''Dewey Defeats Truman. Thomas E. Dewey & Harry S. Truman. Chicago Daily Tribune on November 3, 1948. Heading into Election Day on November 2, 1948, it seemed like Thomas Dewey had the U.S. presidency in the bag. Numerous polls and pundits predicted a win for the a Michigan native, New York governor and prominent gang busting attorney. But, as a now famous photograph would show, everyone including the editors of the Chicago Tribune got it wrong. The surprise victory of the plain spoken Democratic nominee, Harry S. Truman, would become one of the biggest upsets in U.S. presidential history and it would forever be memorialized thanks to an embarrassing newspaper gaffe. A now famous photograph taken two days after the president's come from behind triumph. The president was on his way back to Washington from Missouri when his train stopped in St. Louis. It was in the station where Truman picked up a two-day old copy of the Tribune. Holding the paper, which blared the erroneous banner headline. ''Dewey Defeats Truman.'' Truman flashes a triumphant smile.'' Mounted on both sides of the plaque are 1948 presidential campaign buttons [reproductions] of President Truman and Governor Dewey. The display has been professionally assembled in all acid free materials and triple matted as follows. The outer mate is a burgundy linen which has been accented with a silver and black inner matte.
