Description
George IV sterling silver inkstand. Made by Barnard & Sons, Ltd in London in 1832. Stand has plain rectilinear well with curved corners and mounted wafer bowl set in leafy mount on spread and scrolled foot between rings supporting inkpot and sander. Both inkpot and sander are clear glass with bellied leaf-and-dart bowls and scrolled sterling silver covers. Stand has sumptuous leaf and scroll rim with flowers on corner supports. A lavish symbol of the long-lost epistolary arts. Stand and bottle collars have same marks. Bottle covers later with maker's stamp for Walter & John Barnard and 1872 date letter.Overall dimensions: H 5 x W 12 3/4 x D 8 1/2 in. Weight (silver only): 36 troy ounces. #BV563
