    Description

Up for bid is a decent early Old Sheffield Plate sugar basket, circa 1790. The basket is 5 3/8 inches long 4 inches wide and 6 1/8 inches tall at the top with the handle up.  The basket has a bail handle with beading, a pierced and engraved band of decoration, a fluted lower section and an oval beaded foot.  The body is hand raised, with visible hammer marks in the interior.  It has not been monogrammed.  The foot seems to be weighted and covered with a sheet of pierced sheet metal.  The piece has no marks other than several scratched number codes.

Condition on the basket is fair. There is quite a bit of copper showing, mainly on the foot and one side of the body.  There seem to be some minor repairs at the handle attachments, but nothing too bad.  Regardless, an attractive piece of early Old Sheffield Plate!
