DEWITT CLINTON & JOHN HAVILAND.DeWitt Clinton (March 2, 1769- February 11, 1828) was an American politician who served as a United States Senator, Mayor of New York City, and Governor of New York. As governor he heavily influenced the development of infrastructure improvements and the construction of the Erie Canal. He was also a major candidate for the American presidency in the election of 1812, challenging incumbent James Madison. John Haviland (December 15, 1792- March 28, 1852) was a major figure in American neo-classical architecture and help build the Tombs, which is the colloquial name for the Manhattan Detention Complex in Lower Manhattan.
