    Description

A great abstract scene on this piece of Deschutes Picture jasper with deep rosy-mauve and blue-gray hill patterns around a central rosette. The photos are showing a lot of golden ochre, which isn't apparent in person. The colors are saturated and deep; some old-timers exposed darker slabs to the summer sun for months after cutting and polishing in order to lighten them, though you never know which colors will fade more (if you try this, you can always re-sand with your finest grit and polish to go back to the original shade). There are some open formation shrinkage fractures along the edges, but there is plenty of solid material here. I think this eye-catching scene would make an impressive collector's display slab if given a simple face polish. There is also plenty of material to cut several collectible cabochon gems with lots of design possibilities. This material is hard stuff and should take a glass-like polish. There hasn't been any of this material dug in 50 years, so it is getting scarce.
Deschutes is one of the premier "porcelain" jaspers (so-named because of the glass-like polish which it takes). Deschutes, Morrisonite and Imperial jaspers are the triumvirate representing highest-quality jaspers, and each has been given the designation "King of Jaspers" by various writers. Although it is sometimes confused with the nearby Biggs jasper, Deschutes usually has tighter patterns, a different color palette and is more dense (more highly silicified). Deschutes jasper is now extinct; although the deposit was totally exhausted some 40 years ago, it is still highly sought after by collectors
    .
The photo which includes the measure/ruler was taken dry, the material in the other pictures was dampened to better approximate how the colors and patterns may intensify after being polished. Not as yellow as appears in the photos. I made photos in direct sun.

    Shipping
Get free shipping on additional items when combining for Flat Rate delivery
If you are purchasing multiple items within 14 days of your first buy or auction win from me, it is usually possible to combine and pay for the items together to save on shipping costs. If they all fit into one Flat Rate box, the additional items ship at no extra postage cost. If you wish to take advantage of combined shipping of multiple items bought during a 14-day period, do not pay until after you have purchased your last item (or after your last auction item has closed), then send me a message requesting combined shipping. Because the items I sell vary widely in size, weight and fragility, some items may not be able to be shipped together, or may require a larger box. If you are bidding multiple bulky or fragile items, please provide me with your zip or postal code and ask me for an estimate of the cost. After your request, a new invoice will be issued with the postage adjusted.
    Notes

Once you make a payment, I am obligated to arrange shipping within 24 hours and it will no longer be possible to combine additional items. Please wait until your last item has closed before paying, then request an invoice (on the payment screen, click "Request amount").
Some international destinations shipped to using eBay's Global Shipping program are currently not able to be combined into a single package (please ask before bidding if the destination is outside the United States).
