Signed First Day Cover / Unsigned Photograph
Author:
ROMULO, Carlos P. (1899-1985)
Title:
Signed First Day Cover / Unsigned Photograph
Description:
Considered one of the founders of the United Nations, this Philippine journalist, diplomat and statesman was the first Asian to serve as president of the U.N. General Assembly (1949-50) and the first Asian to win a Pulitzer Prize in journalism (1942); he served in the cabinet under eight Philippine presidents and as that country's ambassador to the U.N. and to the U.S.
Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in New York, NY on 20 November 1970 and with "First Day of Issue" marked. Fine. Single 6-cent "United Nations 25th Anniversary" at upper right. No ornamental cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address. Near the center "sweet spot," Romulo signs boldly in full in black fountain pen. Original transmittal envelope present. Accompanied by a superb and choice glossy 8½" X 6½" news agency photograph (International News Photo) from 1945. Near fine. Captioned "Philippine Delegates Sign World Charter" on the mimeographed descriptive text (still attached on verso), it's a group portrait showing a seated Philippine official signing an official document surrounded by a group that includes the U.S. Undersecretary of State. Standing prominently alongside the signer is Romulo, then Resident Commissioner of the Philippines. A handsome signed FDC and a desirable vintage photograph.
