    BORIS N. YELTSIN - DOCUMENT SIGNED 11/05/1986 - HFSID 276015
    BORIS YELTSIN
The man who dissolved the Soviet Union signs a document while still a Communist Party official.
    Partly printed document signed:
    "B. N. Yeltsin"
as First Secretary of the Moscow Communist Party Committee
    , 2p, 5x7½.
    Moscow, 1986 November 5.
Signed on p2. Information List and order form from the All Union State Joint Venture State Publishing Committee of the USSR. [Intervening pages, listing the available books, are present behind the featured pages, but not displayed or translated.] The order form, signed by Yeltsin with particulars filled in by an unknown hand, reads
in Cyrillic script, translated in full:
"I hereby request the release [i.e., sale] of the following books that are numbered in order on the on the information list. I request that you inform comrade B. N. Yeltsin about the completion of my order of
    six
titles, and of the price of the released books. [Signature] 5 November 1986. No. 5522/Registration/Number of ordered titles:
    six.
Received [left blank]/[Date left blank. Last Name: First, Patronymic: Yeltsin, B. N./Organization: Moscow City Committee of the CPSU./Date of completion of order [left blank]."
    Accompanied by
unsigned photo of Yeltsin (color, 5x7),
matted with the document to an overall size of 17x20¼
    .
    Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin (1931-2007)
joined the Soviet Communist Party in 1961. Working his way up through the hierarchy, he was
appointed 1st Secretary of the Moscow City CPSU Committee - in effect, the mayor - and simultaneously to the highest Communist Party organ, the Politburo, in 1985
. Stepping forward as a reformer, he won popularity with Muscovites but
    clashed increasingly with Mikhail Gorbachev
, the General Secretary of the Communist Party. In
    1987
, after he delivered an outspokenly critical speech, Yeltsin was
removed from the Politburo and from leadership of the Moscow Committee
. When elections were held in 1989, Yeltsin won a seat in the Congress of People's Deputies and by the following year was, in effect, the chief executive of the Russian Republic (still a subordinate unit within the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics).
Yeltsin quit the Communist Party in July 1990. In June 1991, he was elected President of the Russian Republic. Yeltsin's moment of glory came in August 1991, when communist hardliners tried to overthrow the reforming government and restore themselves to power. Yeltsin made a fiery speech from atop a tank outside the Soviet parliament, rallying public support and facing down the coup leaders. The coup collapsed, and Yeltsin effectively replaced Gorbachev as Russian leader. In December 1991, he banned the Communist Party in the Russian Republic and dissolved the Soviet Union
into a Commonwealth of Independent States.
Yeltsin's eight years as first President of the Russian Federation (1991-1999) proved disappointing.
He ruled autocratically, resorting to force on occasion, and his attempted economic reforms were mostly unsuccessful, leaving the nation's economy in ruins. By the time he left office, succeeded by Vladimir Putin, Yeltsin was a very ill man, and a very unpopular one. Nevertheless, Yeltsin remains a very important player on the stage of Russian and world history. Print on p2 verso shows through faintly. Mounting tape on verso of mat. Items not examined outside mat. Overall, fine condition. Not matted in the Gallery of History style.
