Description
Presented is a lovely Irish Georgian sterling silver teapot. This teapot was made by Richard Sawyer and dates to 1812. The teapot is done in a handsome classical form, with fabulous hand engraved floral designs throughout its surface. The teapot stands on four ball form feet, and has a beautifully carved handle and finial. The teapot has a finely engraved crest on one side of a hand holding a dagger, with the motto above, "This is our charter." This is the crest and motto, appropriately enough, of the Scottish Clan Charteris. This piece is in great overall condition. The details of the engraved designs are nice and crisp. There are a couple of dings here and there, but nothing of any significance in our opinion. There are no splits, no leaks, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
This piece is hallmarked on the underside with the seated Hibernia mark for sterling silver, the harp crowned for the city of Dublin, the date letter Q for 1812, King George III's head duty mark, and the maker's mark for Richard Sawyer. The lid is also marked with King George III's head duty mark.
The teapot measures about 13 inches from spout to handle and stands about 6 5/8 inches tall. The teapot has a capacity of about 8 cups (64 fluid ounces/1.89 liters).
The teapot weighs 628 grams or 22.2 regular ounces.
