Description

Presented is a wonderful 18th century English sterling silver coffee pot made by John Swift of London. The pot is done in an elegant lighthouse form with a tapering cylindrical body. The pot has a nice carved wood handle and a hinged lid topped with an urn form finial. The spout is decorated with fine applied acanthus leaf ornamentation. The front of the pot is engraved with a fancy design of flowers, scrolls, and leaves. This is not the original engraving/crest. The original monogram or crest has undoubtedly been removed and this crest/decoration has been added. The sterling has been thinned where the monogram/crest was removed, but there is no outward indication of the original monogram or any monogram removal.
The pot is hallmarked below the rim with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard’s head crowned for London, the date letter ‘h’ for 1743, and a maker’s mark of JS for John Swift.
There has been a repair to the inside edge of the lid as we have shown in the photographs. This is only noticeable upon close inspection. Undoubtedly there would have been additional hallmarks on the inside rim of the lid. Because this inside rim has been replaced the hallmarks are no longer there. This repair, in our opinion, is quite minor, very well done and undoubtedly would never have been noticed and less pointed out. Otherwise, the condition is excellent. The pot is clean on the interior. The handle is tight to the body. There are no dents, no splits, no breaks, and no repairs.
The pot is 7 1/2 inches wide from handle to spout and 8 3/4 inches tall.
The weight is 775 grams or 27.2 ounces.
