1948 Dec. 1, Hand-signed Letter to Mrs. Van S. Merle-Smith from Ursula M. Niebuhr. Mrs. Niebuhr founded the religion department at Barnard College in 1931 and continued as professor and chairwoman there for two decades. Mrs. Merle-Smith made on-going contributions to charities, especially Christian charities. In the letter Mrs. Niebuhr talks about a piece she wrote last Easter.This letter is in very good to excellent condition. There is no apparent damage. The surface, corners and edges are in perfect condition. Mrs. Merle-Smith kept files of all of her correspondences, and kept them in very good condition.

Rare and historical, "1948 Dec. 1, Hand-signed Letter to Mrs. Van S. Merle-Smith from Ursula M. Niebuhr."
This letter is from
Ursula M. Niebuhr (1907-1997),
who founded the religion department at Barnard College in 1931 and continued as professor and chairwoman there for two decades. Born in Southampton, England, she was the first woman to win a fellowship to Union Theological Seminary. It was there she met the famous theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr, whom she married in 1931.  Mrs. Merle-Smith made on-going contributions to charities, especially Christian charities.    And she would  have been friends with Mrs. Niebuhr.
Armed with this information you will now understand his letter to Mrs. Van Merle-Smith a bit better.  In it Mrs. Niebuhr talks about a piece she wrote last Easter.  Apparently Mrs. Merle-Smith requested a piece from her.   Mrs. Niebuhr says she hopes that Mrs. Merle-Smith will be able to use it, but that it might take some reworking.
Condition
: This letter is in very good to excellent condition.   There is no apparent damage.   The surface, corners and edges are in perfect condition.  Mrs. Merle-Smith kept files of all of her correspondences, and kept them in very good condition.
