    Description

Presented is a lovely Old Sheffield Plate food warmer serving dish made between 1800 to 1830s. The piece displays a fancy gadroon edge on  each section. The handles have a nice threaded detail and grape clusters where  they meet the body. The warmer separates into three sections: one for hot or cold water, for heating or cooling, one for the actual food being served, and a lid on top. On either  side of the lid, there is a sterling insert which displays a crest.
    Crest information:
The center of the crest displays the heraldry for the  Hamilton clan: an oak tree with the motto “Through”. Around the tree is the mark  for the Order of the Garter, reading “Honi soit qui mal y pense" meaning “shame  on anyone who thinks evil of it”. Due to the likely time period, we believe this  piece belonged to Alexander Hamilton, the 10th Duke of Hamilton. The 10th Duke  of Hamilton, is listed as a member of the Order of the Garter during the Reign  of King William IV. The Duke of Hamilton held the position of Lord Lieutenant of  Lanarkshire from 1802 to1852. The crown above the crest is likely the Scottish  royal crown.
This piece is from the estate of Florence Adele Vanderbilt Twombly, the granddaughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt.
The piece is in great overall condition, especially considering age. There are only a few spots where the silver is worn to reveal the copper underneath. A few small nicks in the plating is visible on the rear side near the corner of the base, which can be seen in the second and third photos. There are no dents, no splits, no breaks, and no repairs.
Measurements: 10 1/2 inches across from handle to handle, 5 1/4 inches wide, and 6 1/2 inches tall
